Effects of Immigration on the State of the Economy

The current race for Maryland’s Congressional Fourth District comes at a time when the entire country is unstable and possibly on the verge of an economic collapse. While major issues threaten the strength of American on political, economical, and moral levels it seems that all three major candidates-- Michael Babula, Donna Edwards, and Albert Wynn-- from Montgomery County seem to be aiming at restoring “the principles for which we all want to believe America still stands” [i] At a time when the entire country is dealing with crisis on many different fronts it is not surprising that every election will have an influence on how these issues are dealt with. A major issue in America right now is the restriction of immigration and the effects that is will have on the economy.
While thousands and thousands of immigrants pour into America year after year the fear becomes that a weakened economy and a government with loose regulations will not be able to stabilize itself due to the combination of rising oil prices and a drastically rising population. The topic of immigration is comprised of two issues, the economic effects and the moral component. In Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District election hopeful Dr. Michael Babula has taken an economic approach to the immigration question. As a professor of economics Dr. Babula understands the added pressures that immigration will add to the government, but he is also able to see the long term effects such as a stronger and larger workforce that can drive the American economy back up. It is commonly known in the economic world that a larger workforce will allow for higher production levels which will in turn lead to a stronger American economy and American dollar. [ii]
While Dr. Babula takes an economic approach to the immigration debate Albert Wynn takes a more personal approach to how the United States should react to immigration. Wynn is more concerned with the displacement of families and the treatment on illegal deportees than he is with their involvement in the economy. Wynn believes that there should be a better system in place within American borders that will help assimilate illegal immigrants into America much like the current plan under President Bush.[iii]
Donna Edwards is the third front-running candidate in the Maryland Fourth District Congressional Race, and although she does not state her option on her campaign website her stances are all aimed at the restoration and return of America to its former glory. I support Dr. Michael Babula.
